Turunçlu Mosque
A neighborhood mosque at the heart of Ottoman-era social life
History
Located in a quiet neighborhood of Nicosia, Turunçlu Mosque is a valuable place of worship from the Ottoman period. Its architecture combines simplicity with the distinctive features of traditional Ottoman mosque design. Historically, the mosque played an important role in shaping the social life of the neighborhood. As a community mosque, it served as a hub for both worship and unity. Tombstones in its courtyard shed light on the mosque’s long-standing presence. For the local population, it is not only a place of prayer but also a gathering point. The name "Turunçlu" (meaning "with bitter orange trees") comes from the fragrant citrus trees that once grew around the site. Even today, the mosque remains an essential part of the neighborhood’s identity.
