Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Physics thanked EMU General Manager of Cyprus Foundations Administration (Evkaf) for their support by donating three telescopes. Dr. A plaque presentation ceremony was held for İbrahim F. Benter. The ceremony, which took place on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 14:00, at the EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences General Physics-2 Laboratory; EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Letters, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan, Head of Physics and Chemistry Departments Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı, academicians and students attended.
“TELESCOPES WILL PROVIDE GREAT BENEFITS”
Delivering the opening speech of the ceremony, EMU Physics and Chemistry Department Head Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı stated that the EMU Rectorate donated a telescope to the university in line with the need for a telescope, which arose due to the increased interest in the Astronomy Workshop, which started at EMU and where children from different age groups could attend, and the two elective courses on astronomy opened in the Physics Department. He noted that they submitted a petition to Evkaf in order not to bring more burden and that they obtained a total of 4 astronomy telescope parks by getting the help of 3 telescopes from Evkaf. Stating that telescopes will provide great benefits, Prof. Dr. Sakallı, on behalf of EMU Physics Department, General Manager of Evkaf Prof. Dr. Thanks to İbrahim F. Benter.
“EVENTS CAN BE SPREAD TO LARGER AUDIENCES”
EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan noted that EMU Physics Department has the only program in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) that offers undergraduate education in the field of Physics in English. Underlining that EMU is also very strong scientifically, Prof. Dr. Özarslan stated that he is in the 201-250 band in the field of Physical Sciences in the Times Higher Education World University Field Ranking. Stating that he observed that young people were very interested in activities in the field of physical sciences, Prof. Dr. Özarslan pointed out that this curiosity should not be extinguished and that it should continue to increase. Expressing that this year's events will be more interesting and spread to wider audiences with 4 new telescopes, Prof. Dr. Özarslan thanked both EMU Rectorate and Evkaf.
“SOCIETIES WITH STRONG BASIC EDUCATION GO FORWARD IN EVERY AREA”
EMU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel pointed out the importance of basic sciences for EMU and noted that societies with strong basic education go forward in every field. Stating that EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences has a rare and valuable staff, Prof. Dr. Demirel stated that supporting such a staff with advanced technology products makes success inevitable. Stating that Evkaf attaches importance to science, societies that attach importance to science can progress, and that the biggest indicator of this is basic sciences. Dr. Demirel wished successful work to all participants.
“I WISH NEW TELESCOPES TO EXPAND STUDENTS' HORIZONS”
EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Expressing proudly that EMU is one of the most important institutions serving in the TRNC, Aykut Hodja noted that with its vision, EMU is the biggest project of the Turkish Cypriot People and its window to the world. Emphasizing that EMU, as a state university, offers quality education, it can also compete in the international arena. Dr. He noted that the university is in the 501-600 band in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and is in the second place across the island of Cyprus. Noting that EMU is a very good scientific environment where students from many countries of the world bruise their elbows, ponder and solve problems, Prof. Dr. Expressing that this environment was created with a vision and that this vision played an important role in supporting EMU from different organizations, the teacher wished that new telescopes would increase the curiosity of the students and broaden their horizons.
“WE AIM TO CONTRIBUTE TO PROVIDING THE MOST CONTEMPORARY EDUCATION POSSIBLE”
Evkaf General Manager Prof. Dr. İbrahim F. Benter stated that coming to EMU always makes him very happy because he feels like he has attended universities in Europe and America. Pointing out that the education and research institutions system in the most developed countries of the world has been established at EMU and this system has borne fruit, Prof. Dr. Benter pointed out that EMU has demonstrated that it is an institution that can develop and renew itself and be at the forefront of science with its academic publications in different fields in the world's leading scientific journals. Expressing that they are proud and honored to have such a university in Cyprus, Prof. Dr. Benter, in very difficult conditions and financial impossibilities.

He emphasized the value of achieving these achievements in the past. Stating that as Evkaf, they aim to contribute to the provision of the most modern education possible for children and students, Prof. Dr. Benter stated that perhaps one day, a child coming out of this laboratory will go into space and participate in research. prof. Dr. Benter wished to do better things together.
PARTICIPANTS STUDY THE SUN WITH THE NEW TELESCOPPER
After the speeches, EMU Physics Department Distinguished Professor Prof. Dr. Mustafa Halilsoy gave information to the participants about the causes of solar flares and how they affect the world. Then Prof. Dr. Halilsoy, on behalf of EMU, Evkaf General Manager Prof. Dr. İbrahim F. presented a plaque of appreciation to Benter. After the presentation ceremony, the participants had the opportunity to look at the sun with the new telescope installed in the garden of the research laboratories. Students' interest in the event was intense.
