Ottoman Fountains in Cyprus

Most of the street fountains in the Ottoman period were built by wealthy people for charity. The water to be used for washing and drinking purposes was taken from these fountains with tins and earthen jugs.

In addition, travelers used to water their animals from these fountains. Ottoman fountains with a mirror stone with a faucet in an arched niche and a trough in front of it, street fountains adjacent to the wall of a building or a water reservoir, square fountains with prismatic chambers with a tap on each face, or a fountain were built as fountains.

In places and structures where there is not yet a river network, fountains in the form of stone boats with taps, which are filled with water carried from a nearby well or cistern, were also built. In fact, some sarcophagi from earlier periods or street fountains from earlier periods were also used for this purpose.

Again, some travelers wrote that the water flowing from the aqueducts and neighborhood fountains in Nicosia caused the mostly dirt roads to become muddy.
