The recent statements made by Archbishop Georgios have been carefully followed by us.

The island of Cyprus has historically been one of the rare regions that has embraced diverse religions and cultures. This multicultural structure has been shaped by a will to live in mutual respect and tolerance.

Islamic civilization has been one of the strongest representatives of this understanding for centuries. Indeed, this is clearly expressed in the Holy Quran:

“There is no compulsion in religion.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 256)

Furthermore, the approach towards different faiths is presented in the Holy Quran as follows:

“Your religion is for you, and my religion is for me.” (Surah Al-Kafirun, Verse 6)

These fundamental principles clearly demonstrate that tolerance, freedom of belief, and a culture of living in mutual respect are at the core of Islam.

The Turkish Cypriot people and institutions, as a reflection of this understanding of civilization, have shown respect for all religious beliefs from the past to the present, protected freedom of worship, and contributed to the preservation of diverse religious heritage.

In this context, it is of great importance that those representing religious authorities do not use divisive, destructive, and disruptive language in their statements. Statements that ignore historical realities or deepen divisions between communities risk harming peace on the island.

Building a future as neighbors on the same island is possible not through a one-sided interpretation of the past, but through mutual understanding, respect, and dialogue.

As always, we will continue to support the tolerant environment in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus where different faiths can coexist peacefully.
